- Sound is crated when atoms or molecules crash into each other. Sound travels in the form of a pressure wave where vibrations pass through any medium. (solid, liquid, or gas)
- The SOFAR channel is an area of ocean where sound travels slower, but farther. It does not rise of the surface or reach the bottom of the ocean.
- Marine organisms may use sound in the ocean by using mating calls and vocal cords. They use the rate of the sound and different structures of the sound to communicate. They use echo location to find their way through the oceans, which is sound waves they give off and when it bounces off, it will sense that something is nearby.
- People use a process called sonar in which sound waves are produced and when they bounce back information about the geography and inhabitants of the ocean are received.
- Sonar is used to map the ocean floor by using sound waves and whatever it hits, it will send information back to the system.
